Rawson cricket commenced last Monday 7March. St Andrew’s dismissed a St Paul’s XI with a distinctly fresher hue for 79, with Tom Gooch and James Cahill taking three wickets each. An impressive bowling performance by the pauline leg spinner put our batting order under pressure in chasing the small total, but we eventually scored the winning runs with 2 wickets in hand, thanks mostly to a patient and sound 25 from ‘keeper/batsman Ben Cannon.
Wesley was our next opponent on Wednesday 9 March. St Andrew’s had first use of a damp track, and after some early difficulties managed 197 after 47 overs, due mainly to an outstanding knock of 71 not out by captain Liam Robertson, with handy contributions by fresher James Larkin (27) and the ancient Charlie Cull (22). Wesley took full advantage of the now-benign nature of the track, and after a slow start managed to get to within 40 runs with 4 overs remaining. We felt that we were always in control, especially after Tom Gooch ripped through the middle order to again take three wickets. Cam Patrick bowled the last over – a wicket maiden – to secure the victory.
The final match is scheduled for St Paul’s Oval next Wednesday 16th March (commencing at 10:00am), when we take on the also-undefeated St John’s team. We welcome your attendance and support as we strive for a first-up victory in the 2011 Rawson Cup campaign.
