Rosebowl Hockey Round 5

31 May 2012

ROUND 5

The teams were met with wet conditions once again today to wrap up Rosebowl Hockey.

Wesley took on St John’s in the opening match requiring victory to keep the pressure on Women’s & Andrew’s. However, it was John’s who started stronger, playing expansively and putting the Wesley defence under pressure. The first penalty corner went to John’s after 10 minutes but was repelled. Both teams began to find their range with a few opportunities falling both ways. However, neither team could break through, until on the stroke of half time, Wesley were able to convert a penalty corner to take a slender 1‐0 lead to the break. Wesley were faster out of the blocks in the second half, and quickly doubled their advantage with a well taken shot from the edge of the circle.

John’s didn’t drop their heads though, continuing to take the match to Wesley, coming very close to pulling one back shortly after with a shot just pushed wide. John’s put in their best performance of the tournament, and with time running out, grabbed a well deserved goal seconds before the final whistle.Wesley 2 (G.Morgan, S.Norman goals) def. St John’s 1 (O.Wilde goal) (HT 1‐0).

The morning’s result meant that a 3 way tie was still a possibility should Women’s be able to defeat Andrew’s. Both teams knew what was at stake, and the match was played at a furious pace throughout. Immediately from the first whistle, both teams threw themselves into challenges. It was a tight first 10 minutes, before the first goal came, Andrew’s going 1‐0 up. Andrew’s enjoyed a short period of control, forcing a number of penalty corners, but Women’s were able to hold out. Women’s had the better of it in the last 10 minutes of the half, with many entries into the Andrew’s half, before having to pull off a strong save of their own just before half time. The second half began as fast as the first, and Andrew’s were able to immediately capitalise, going up 2‐0 from a penalty corner. Women’s continued to raid the Andrew’s goal, but were unable to convert, Andrew’s able to control the game, finishing off their tournament with a further 2 goals. St Andrew’s 4 (Wright (2), Scott, Tout goals) def.
Women’s 0 (HT 1‐0).

Congratulations to St Andrew’s for going undefeated, and not conceding a goal to win
