Rosebowl Hockey Report 2012
The Rosebowl hockey campaign began with trials in early April before the Easter break. Once the team was selected, the girls worked hard, getting up at 5.30am twice a week for training at Cintra Hockey Pitch.
After an eventful practice match against the Andrew’s Men, the girls were all warmed up to commence the tournament on Wednesday the 23rd of May at the Cintra Hockey Pitch, Concord.
Andrew’s first game was against Sancta, dominating an improving Sancta team, winning with a final score of 16-0. Although Sancta’s goalkeeper pulled off multiple amazing saves, fR fi tout finished scoring 8 of the 16 goals. The Second game on Thursday the 24th against St John’s College was predicted to be a closer contest. St Andrew’s came out strong, scoring 4 in the first half. John’s defense resisted in the second half, limiting Andrew’s to only 2 more goals. The final score rested at 6-0, hard fought by both teams.
After a rest day on Friday and the weekend, Andrew’s had one of their most important games on Monday the 28th of May against the also undefeated Wesley. The winner of this game would guarantee at least an equal 1st position. The game started off neck and neck, with Wesley having the first opportunity, a penalty shot skidding just wide of the goals. Andrew’s had a similar story down their attacking end, finally scoring through Ferrier, a courageous touch past the Wesley Goal keeper. Only 1-0 up at half time, the game could go anyway but Andrew’s converted within the first minute of the game to double their lead. With the help of an inspiring save on the goal line by Hayes, and two more goals through several passages of fast team ball movement allowed Andrew’s the win, 4-0.
The last game against Women’s College on Tuesday the 29th was the decider of an outright win for Andrew’s. Immediately after the starting whistle, both teams threw themselves into the contest. The physical battle was even after 10 minutes. Andrew’s scoring at the 10th minute giving them a 1-0 lead. Andrew’s then began to control the game. The second half began with an immediate conversion of a short corner, doubling the lead. Andrew’s then finished their undefeated season with two more goals, having conceded none all tournament.
A great tournament by the girls and thank you to everyone who hiked out to Concord to support.
